We are delighted to share the news of our recent awards and recognition received for Wire Works Whisky.  Wire Works picked up two gold medals in this years World Whiskies Awards. Wire Works Over Smoke won gold in the small batch single malt, no age statement category, and was awarded category winner. Wire Works Virgin Oak also received a gold medal in the small batch single malt 12 years and picked up category winner honours too. This means both releases progress to the next stage of the competition.

The Awards

The World Whiskies Awards  launched in 2007 by the Whisky Magazine, with the aim of promoting and rewarding the best whiskies in a comprehensive annual tasting. The awards are presented each year by thedrinksreport.com. The entries are blind tasted by an international panel of experts. Each drink is marked on aroma, flavour, finish, with other elements also taken into consideration. Individual scores are added together to give an overall mark, and used to calculate the best and top-scoring spirits.

The Whisky

Wire Works Over Smoke

Over Smoke is a limited release of just 1263 bottles, from four ‘STR ROS’ casks. STR is a core part of our wood program and flavour profile and we have quite a variety in the warehouse. The four STR casks selected for this release have all been through an extra process of ‘re-charred over smoke (ROS)’ that we specified with the cooperage.  Over Smoke has been fully matured in these STR ROS casks and bottled at 52.7% ABV.

Wire Works Virgin Oak

Wire Works Virgin Oak’s flavour profile is true to the Wire Works house style – made with lightly peated malted barley, live brewer’s yeast and a long fermentation time to add deep fruit notes in the spirit. A vatting of lightly peated single malt whisky initially matured in premium, first fill ex-bourbon barrels and then finished for several months at a lower ABV in virgin American oak barrels (with a select range of toast and char levels). The bold oak-forward flavours of the casks contribute to the intensity and combination of sweet & spice, showcasing the rich fruit flavours and elegant smoke profile of the core house spirit.

As a young distillery, these medals are a real boost for our team. We strive to create great-tasting, flavour-forward whisky that people will enjoy across occasions, and a English-born brand that people associate with contemporary quality.

In the 2 years since we launched Wire Works Whisky, we’ve been humbled by the response, these awards are hugely motivating and keeps us focused on our long-term approach to whisky-making.
